Post operative Information to patient for tonsillectomy

Date : 2018-08-06 11:11:12

Once you are discharged from the Hospital you have to follow the medicines and advice mentioned in the discharge summary provided to you from the hospital. In tonsil operation, both tonsils are removed and the tonsil fossa are left bare (uncovered). Healing of this area with new mucosa coverage takes about 15 days. It is usual to have blood stained sputum or few drops of blood from mouth for about 10 days after the operation. In case of any excess bleeding, bleeding after 10 days of operation, neck lump or swelling, you should visit your doctor as soon as possible. In Indian climate, patient should be under cover of Antibiotics for 10 days after operation to prevent any infection with resultant bleeding. You may have severe pain for approximately 7 days after the operation for which you are under pain killers. These pain killers are known to have bad effects on kidney and stomach occasionally, so you should restrict yourself in taking these in empty stomach and only on as required basis with eight hours minimal gap between 2 doses. In case you still have excess pain then a tablet in the name of ultracet can be taken 12 hourly with advice from your operating surgeon. You can have diet for 15 days as per your acceptance with respect to pain during eating. It is better to start with thick liquid diet like shakes followed by semisolid diet like custard/pudding/khichdi/dalia without chilli. Next visit to doctor for revision of medicines should be on 5th, 11th and 20th days (from discharge date).
